JEFF BUTLER
With over three decades of experience in volleyball coaching and player development, Jeff Butler has established himself as a prominent figure in the sport. His coaching journey began at Mattawan High School, where he served as the Varsity Volleyball Coach from 1986 to 1994 and again from 1997 to 2008. During his tenure, Jeff led the team to several SMAC West Division Championships, a Class B District Championship in 2002, and notable victories including the 2008 Greater Kalamazoo Tournament Championship and the 2008 Class A District Championship.
In addition to his high school coaching, Jeff was instrumental in the founding of Dead Frog Volleyball, where he served as both a coach and board member from 1992 to 1996. The high point of his time at Dead Frog was coaching their 18U team to a USAV 18 Open Bronze Medal at Nationals in 1994.
Jeff’s collegiate coaching experience includes a role as Assistant Coach at Western Michigan University from 1994 to 1997, where he managed home matches, directed out-of-state recruiting, and played a key role in player development. He successfully transitioned the program from former coach Rob Buck to new hire Cathy George, ensuring a smooth changeover and continued success.
From 2015 to 2017, Jeff coached the Mattawan Middle School 8th Grade Volleyball team, leading them to an undefeated season in 2016 and mentoring players like current PVF Orlando Valkyrie standout Natalie Foster.
Jeff’s commitment to excellence is further exemplified through his involvement with FaR Out Volleyball Club, where he has coached since 2006-2007 and again from 2021 to the present. Under his guidance, the club has achieved remarkable success, including the 2007 USJO Regional Championship in the 17U Open Division, the 2021 Motor City Madness and Indy Cup Tournament Championships in the 16U division, and culminating their season with a Gold Medal at the 2021 AAU Nationals in the Classic Division. His 2022 team won a Silver Medal at AAU Nationals in the same division, while his 2023 team won the MLK 15U Open Championship in Fort Lauderdale and finished 5th at the AAU National Championships in the Open Division.
Currently, Jeff serves as the Founder, Teaching Leader, and Director of the FaR Out Coaching Academy, where he continues to inspire and develop the next generation of volleyball players and coaches. His passion for the sport and dedication to fostering a love for volleyball in his athletes make him a respected and influential figure in the volleyball community.
